Our client wanted to created a large ‘natural’ wildlife pond and waterfall in their garden, using an innovative clay liner known as ‘Bentomat’. This was to remove a small redundant pond and replace it with a very large wildlife pond that would attract a variety of wildlife.

The Geosynthetic clay liner known as ‘Bentomat’ is ‘self healing’ if punctured, and creates a very natural looking pond. Our client also wanted to create a natural looking stream and waterfall leading into the pond to aid circulation and oxygenation of the water.

The desired location was on a slope, with restricted access. During the build we had rain, snow, wind, hail and sun during creation which made ground conditions very difficult and we had to adapt our approach to tackle this significant challenge!

Our client wanted to link the new pond to the existing pumping system, which meant the finished water level had to be exactly the same as the previous redundant pond, and levels had to be very carefully worked out and kept to. The design of the pond wasn’t conducive the type of liner specified, so we had to adapt our approach and construction and modify the design of the pond slightly, whilst still achieving the desired final ‘feel’ of the pond.

Working with very large boulders to make up the levels meant that we had to get specialist machinery on site to handle and place them.

Outcome

The final pond and stream / waterfall had an immediate ‘established and natural’ feel to it. The large pond has provided a very important breeding habitat for amphibians, as well as a foraging habitat for various birds and bats. Delivery of the project in line with original estimate despite significant setbacks and challenges.

Our client, Simon Bliss, Estate Manager, Daisy Hill House said ‘Paul and the team from Nurture Ecology, took on the difficult job of enlarging the existing pond at Daisy Hill House. From the first meeting Paul demonstrated a professional and thorough manner listening to our thoughts on the renovation of our pond and advising us accordingly. His estimate was concise and he advised the timescale accurately. He has completely transformed the pond and made it a feature of the garden that we are very pleased with, which we hope will soon attract all aspects of native wildlife. We would definitely recommend Paul and the Nurture Ecology team to potential clients.’
