Habitat Specialist - Position Available
What is the role?
We are looking for hard-working, motivated and enthusiastic individuals to join our friendly team as Habitat Specialists. Successful candidates will help our team undertake a diverse range of land management tasks across the Island in many beautiful sites and habitats.
The work includes;
Creation, restoration and management of all natural and semi-natural habitats to optimise them for local wildlife
Natural infrastructure work to create/improve access, or stabilise areas,
Wildlife ponds and wildlife gardens
Green construction; living walls, green retaining walls and green roofs
Environmental enhancement and mitigation, often directly linked to planning requirements
Invasive species management, to control or eradicate problematic species
Bespoke natural habitat projects, bringing creative visions to life using natural materials and wildlife enhancing landscaping
The role will involve working in various environments such as woodlands, heathlands, grasslands and wetlands, undertaking a diverse range of duties including vegetation management, erecting fences, installing steps, making and maintaining footpaths, pond construction, habitat creation, tree planting, invasive plant control and general maintenance of sites etc. Tasks often include the use of strimmers, brushcutters and chainsaws, experience and certification in the use of these tools is desirable.
Experience in landscaping / outdoor / manual work is essential, and a keen interest and passion for the natural environment is required.
What are we looking for?
Candidates must be physically fit & able to carry out heavy manual work
Able to perform manual labour outdoors all year round in all weather conditions
A positive ‘can-do’ and motivated attitude
A full driving licence
Other desirables, but not compulsory:
A batchelors degree in the Environmental Science sector
Experience using strimmers, brush-cutters, chainsaws, etc
Carpentry, stone masonry, construction skills
Basic machinery and tool maintenance skills
Local residency (5 years)
Permanent and seasonal (summer) positions are available
The position is 42.5 hours per week Monday to Friday, but there can be flexibility on these hours. Flexi time is also offered. The salary bracket is competitive and dependent on experience, and 20 days paid holiday plus all bank holidays is the starting allowance.
Training will be provided on the job and extra training programmes both in Jersey and the UK are available to those who wish to further their knowledge.
